MercedesCup / Scoop & Spoon

Challenge

Every twelvemonth, people follow their tennis icons in the courtyard in Stuttgart, Germany, to see who will snap up 250 world-ranking points, a brand-new Mercedes-Benz and the MercedesCup crown on grass.

Scoop and spoon decided to create an app for this event. As a lead designer on this project, I had faced unusual situation. When often designers are struggling to stick to guidelines, boundaries or obstacles, in this situation there was none, except the time. The idea was to use Go-Pro cameras to have the live streaming for people not attending the event, and the rest was up to us. There were 2 designers working on this project in total, and we could come up with anything, at least this is what we were told in the beginning. It's a funny situation, as when there's no limit, somehow brain starts to think differently and in the beginning, it's difficult to put it into right tracks, as there are none guiding you.

Project had a really tight deadline, and when we started cooperating with our dev team, we found a lot of no goes. We had to comprompise on some levels but the results were great. Scoop and Spoon has decided to create a white label from this app and currently it's selling it to other ATP, and sport events.

Live Streams

Second Screen App

As a user you could attend the event on site or from your home through an app. The user was able to view the game live, or on a tv from camera perspective and also view different perspective on his phone. On a landing screen we wanted to show live matches, and ability to jump from one to another and have the ability to view it from different sweet spots distributed around the pitch.

World Premiere

It never happened before, and it was brilliant. Ball boys and girls have been equipped with Go-Pro cameras on their chests, so that a user could view the game from their perspective.

Features

We didn't want it to be just a viewing app, so we have decided to give every user a possibility to interact with the app. Each day our team on site was recording snippets (3-7 Sec videos) from each game. They were uploaded to the app so the user could play around with them. Highlight screen was showing best moments of each day. Hall of Fame would present best snippets edited by users and a schedule screen would show the event road map and would send notifications about the game.

Interaction

The snippet editing tool had been developed by our dev team, days before the event. As designers we have created sets of images (tennis ball), overlay images (terminator screen), so users could place them on the video, adjust on the timeline when it will appear and save on their device or add to the hall of fame. Other features were to add audio, text or selfie.

Results

Unique perspectives, interactive entertainment and unprecedented insights into the world of tennis have contributed to the app’s great success. From the unique vantage point of the referee’s chair, the extraordinary angles of the ball boys or even from the thrilling perspective of the players themselves. To put it in the omniscient words of numbers, the app reached a staggering 1.9 million people in 83 countries, with a grand total of 3,543 hours of video content viewed.
